Tandava
the mystical dance of Shiva and Shakti
This summer solstice, enjoy this sacred practice of Kashmiri Shaivism at Rancho Delicioso with classical tantra-yoga teacher and host, Jivana, and our incredible Tandava facilitator and Kashmiri Tantra teacher, Nicolo Berzi.
What Tandava is
According to Nicolo, Tandava is the main practice of the tantric Shivaism of Kashmir. It is a meditation in motion where, in vigilant presence, the creativity and the expression of the vital energy in our body is explored.
Nicolo says, "instead of leading the energy trying to achieve something with specific movements, we step back into silent presence, becoming the space of awareness where movements happens. Letting expand this attitude from formal practice of yoga to our normal daily life is the invitation of this amazing tradition, a way to let our life transform in pure Art."
From Nicolo's website:
The word Tandava, the dance of Shiva, in sanskrit, comes from different roots and has two meanings which recap the potentials of this practice:
- going towards the fire
- blowing for the relaxation
Tandava, the mystical dance of Shiva, is the spontaneous, slow, and fluid deployee of body movements in the space generated by the conscious breath. The body indulges in spontaneity through the subtile exploration of the physical sensations of both the contracted areas and the soft ones. In this way the body is naturally more receptive and it is ready to be opened to sensoriality. Curiosity, deep listening of the sensations and the availability to let the body move accordingly to its potentials are the main attitudes to handle with this formal practise of the Kashmir Yoga.
